Acupuncture has been clinically shown to improve sleep quality and daytime vitality in this randomized controlled trial.

Title: Efficacy of Acupuncture for Primary Insomnia: A Randomized Controlled Clinical Trial.

Design: A total of 180 patients with primary insomnia were randomly assigned to 3 groups: (1) acupuncture plus placebo; (2) estazolam plus sham acupuncture. (3) sham acupuncture.

Measurements: The outcome was measured by Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, Epworth Sleepiness Scale, and the 36-item short-form health survey.

Results: Compared with the other two groups, Acupuncture plus placebo had improved sleep quality and vitality, decreased daytime dysfunction and sleepiness. Acupuncture appeared to be more effective in increasing sleep quality and daytime functioning than sham acupuncture and estazolam.
